Personal Safety Education for children

Above is a glimpse of
the three personal safety rules being taught during the lessons of the Personal Safety Education (PSE) program by Arpan's PSE Trainer in a school in Mumbai.

Rule no. 1
It is never alright for someone to touch, look at or talk about my private body parts.
It is never alright for someone to ask me to touch, look at or talk about heir private body parts.

Rule no. 2
If someone breaks this rule, I will say NO and Run.

Rule no. 3
I will tell a trusted elder person and that I have a touching problem.

Implementation

The PSE program is implemented over 6 lesson plans of 35 - 40 mins. each over 6 days in which children are taught
- to identify with feelings, (happy, sad, anger, scared, confusion),
- the differences between safe and unsafe touches,
- the three personal safety rules through role play and worksheet activities.

It is a comprehensive program that also includes awareness sessions with parents pre and post the implementation of the PSE program with children and training of teachers and school counselors pre PSE program.

Intervention

A Support Team is also created comprising the Principal, one primary teacher and the school counselors to intervene in cases of inappropriate touching and or sexual abuse that are disclosed by children in the individual sessions conducted by Arpan's trainer post the PSE program.
Arpan's counselors guide the school counselors to take appropriate action. In many cases Arpan's counselor intervenes herself to provide immediate help to the child. Depending on the case the child's parents are informed and steps for intervention are taken. If need be counseling is also suggested for the child.
