YUVA True to the tradition of supporting social causes, Malhar has joined hands with Prerana and Arpan, two NGOs that work with children. Prerana is an NGO that started working in the red light area of Mumbai in 1986, with a view to end second-generation trafficking of the children of Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs). Life in a brothel is a traumatic experience for the child of a CSW. Prerana started the first ever Night Care Centre in the world to provide them with a healthy and safe environment in order to protect them from this undesirable nightlife. The program has benefited five thousand children so far. Prerana and Malhar ’07 hope to raise awareness among the youth about this problem. The children of this organization will perform a skit based on HIV/AIDS and a dance in the First Quad from 3.00 to 3.30 pm today. Do drop by the Prerana kiosk in the arches during Malhar. Information about the NGO, volunteering opportunities, etc. will be available at the stall. Don’t miss the beautifully hand-crafted items made by the women of Prerana. These items will be up for sale at the Souvenirs Stall. Arpan: Statistics show that 53% of all children have been subject to some form of abuse, yet only a fraction of these are brought to light. Arpan endeavours to spread awareness about this heinous crime looking to spare potential victims of this trauma while bringing to book the concerned offenders as well as reaching out the victims – enabling them to rebuild their lives. Their activities range from teaching and playing with children to providing professional assistance to victims of sexual abuse while also fulfilling the various needs of low-budget NGOs. In the words of Pooja Taparia (founder) – “Every sentient being has the right to live with dignity. Preventing Child Sexual Abuse is protecting that dignity and curing the victims by bringing that dignity back.” By working with Arpan, Malhar aims at providing a platform to a cause that hasn’t received its due recognition in today’s society. The children from Arpan will be putting up a special performance at Malhar today between 1.00 and 1.30 pm in the First Quad. Make your Malhar experience more meaningful with a trip to the XRCVC Lounge. This event will sensitize you to the hardships faced by the visually challenged, whilst shattering myths and pre-conceived notions you might have about them. You will be put through a series of challenging as well as thought-provoking games An Obstacle Course, Money Recognition and a workshop on taking photographs blindfolded. Incidentally the exhibition ‘Beyond Sight’ will showcase photographs clicked by the visually challenged.
