Young Indians (CII), Siliguri today organized a 2 Day Program on Basic Understanding on Child Sexual Abuse. This is a workshop organized by Young Indians (Yi), with training support from NGO Arpan, Mumbai, which is the largest NGO in the world working in the area of prevention of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). Ms. Shubhangi Shinde, Master Trainer from Arpan is here in Siliguri to train around 30 adults, who after undertaking the training can in turn train more and more people in Siliguri. Yi with the help of these 30 trainers aims increase the social impact and sensitize more children, parents and teachers. In the last 2 years, Yi has conducted more than 100 sensitization sessions for school students in and around Siliguri and impacted more than 10,000 students.
The objective of Yi’s engagement on Masoom project is to spread awareness on Child Sexual Abuse by conducting workshops with primary school teachers, visiting schools to teach children about safe and unsafe touch, sensitize the parents about it and to spread awareness to the public through rallies and campaigns. A study by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) also showed that 53.22 % of the interviewed children reported having faced some form of sexual abuse and proved that boys were as vulnerable to abuse as girls. And hence the need of the hour is a prevention and awareness program for the community i.e children, parents and schools.
A typical Yi Masoom awareness session starts with the facilitators, who are generally Yi members, taking over the school classrooms and start with a friendly ice-breaking session. Then in a simple and lucid manner, they are taught about Good Touch and Bad Touch, and smart ways to keep them safe from sexual abuse.
At Masoom, we have always believed that a safer children’s environment can be ensured by attentive adults in the community who, upon discovering or suspecting abuse, do their best to stop it and to support victims. Parents, teachers and caregivers can significantly contribute to children’s ability to respond in time, by going over every action they can take if caught in a dangerous situation.
